Heritage At Risk

The decline of the glass-making industry in St. Helens is a relatively recent occurrance, and yet the industry was of key importance to the development and economic viability of the town from the eighteenth century.  Many of the physical remains of this industry have since been lost, placing an increased importance on those structures which survive. 

Cannington Shaw’s No7 Bottle Shop is the last remnant of the former UGB glassworks, which survived the mass site clearance programme in 1982.

Cannington Shaw Bottle Shop Project, St. Helens, Merseyside

The project is being championed by an active group of community members and advised by the St. Helens Heritage Network. Caroline is a volunteer Project Manager, acting Secretary and future Trustee of the Cannington Shaw Preservation Trust. She is also a member of the Princes Trust Heritage Regeneration Forum, BRICK, and will have a dedicated role liaising with Historic England and the private sector owners, securing charitable status and sourcing funding/mentorship opportunities.

Linacre Methodist Mission, Litherland, Sefton

Linacre Methodist Mission is a Grade II Listed Church based in Litherland. Caroline was commissioned to write a £1.2m Stage 2 Heritage Lottery Fund Business Plan, which will support the restoration and conservation of the derelict Albert Walker Hall.  The application has been submitted and we await a decision from HLF in March 2016.

If awarded Caroline will be undertaking detailed Evaluation work for Linacre Methodist Mission to meet the aims of the HLF Programme.

Billinge Community Allotments, St. Helens, Merseyside

Billinge Community Allotments started back in March 2015 on derelict land donated from the Eddleston Trust. They are run and managed by local volunteers. There are 36 plots in total with 5 allocated for use by local village schools, a disability group and a dedicated community area.
